Turkey’s change of name to Türkiye is far from a feather-brained move


“Turkey” can refer to the bird often served on Thanksgiving, the country whose capital is Ankara, or a slang word for a stupid person. The western Asian country (now Türkiye, pronounced ter-key-ye/yay) decided that it was time for a change. The new name, as well as trying to avoid unpleasant implications, is an attempt to establish a new brand for the country, starting with a tourism campaign.
