Egypt will be opening a limited number of areas, to a new flagship Museum as of Wednesday 16th October 2024[a], as a trial run. The New Grand Egyptian Museum built near the pyramids of Giza, will be opening 12 of its particular halls prior to the yet to be announced, full opening
The project itself, costing around 1 billion will be opening its halls for upto 4,000 visitors each day according to Tayyeb Abbas, assistant to the minister of antiquities. The museum itself has been under construction for more than 10 years, with a few of its sections opening since 2022, though an official date for the full opening is yet to be announced. Being delayed repeatedly for various factors, including COVID 19.
There will be up to 100,000 artefacts of ancient Egyptian heritage that will be put up for display, in what will be the world’s largest museum. Across the 12 limited halls, there will be displays entailing society, religion and ancient Egyptian doctrine. Historical eras will include the Third Intermediate Period (about 1070-664 BC), Late Period (664-332 BC), Graeco-Roman Period (332 BC-395 AD), New Kingdom (1550-1070 BC), Middle Kingdom (2030-1650 BC), and Old Kingdom (2649-2130 BC).
The Minister of Tourism and antiquities, Sherif Fathy, has announced that The Grand Egyptian Museum will be implementing new opening hours for its main exhibition halls and sectors as of 1st February, 2025. Executive Director of the museum authority, Ahmed Ghoneim states that the museum will be open all days of the week, from 9am to 6pm both summer and winter. Additionally there will be exceptions and discounts on entry tickets as maintained by the Grand Egyptian Museum.
