The English Premier League title race took a number of twists and turns with a number of unexpected defeats and unlikely victories over the weekend.
Liverpool opened up and 8 point gap at the top of the ladder thanks to a 95th minute penalty from James Milner but the victory came at a cost, with Egyptian striker Mo Salah limping off with an ankle injury. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp later expressed his displeasure at the referee’s failure show a red card to Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury for the challenge on Salah.
Possibly the biggest shock of the weekend came at the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to a brace from Adama Traore in the last 10 minutes to give Wolves their first win at City since 1979. City manager Pep Guardiola was adamant in his post match interview that they can still catch Liverpool but admitted that any more performances of this nature will make catching them increasingly unlikely.
Elsewhere, Chelsea comprehensively beat Southampton with a dominant display, winning 4-1 but London rivals Tottenham Hotspur compounded a miserable week after their 7 – 2 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich by losing 3 – 0 away to Brighton & Hove Albion adding to speculation over the future manager Mauricio Pochetino.Another manager who appears to be getting closer to the exit door is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, who has now presided over the club’s worst start to a season in 30 years. A lacklustre goalless game in the Europa League against Dutch team AZ Alkmar was followed by a 1-0 defeat to lowly Newcastle United. The result leaves Manchester United in 12th place, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool.
