Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur has made history becoming the first Arab woman to reach the finals of a Grand Slam tournament. Jabeur, who was ranked No. 110 only two years ago has been on a winning streak since beating No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round of the Australian Open of that year. Last year the Tunisian star gained world-wide fandom by finishing as the runner up in the 2022 Wimbledon Women’s final.
Jabeur’s stats include a career high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of world No. 2 achieved on 27 June 2022 and is the No. 1 Tunisian player as well as the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in WTA and ATP rankings history.
Jabeur dominates the court with trademark slice and drop shots, she can hit winners in a variety of ways, including backhand drop shots from the baseline or forehands up the line and is lethal on any surface.
Playing tennis at the age of 6, Ons Jabeur has been making a name for herself on the professional circuit in recent years. She has been praised for her powerful and aggressive playing style.
Jabeur’s success at the Australian Open has not only been a major accomplishment for her personally, but it also serves as a source of inspiration for young Arab women who aspire to become professional athletes. Her performance at the tournament is also a source of pride for the entire Tunisian nation and the Arab world.
Jabeur has been an advocate for women’s rights and gender equality in the Arab world, and her success at the Australian Open is a powerful message to young girls and women that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.
As Jabeur continues to make her mark on the professional tennis circuit, she is sure to become a role model for young girls and women all over the world, and her name will be remembered for years to come as a trailblazer in the world of sports.
This year, Jabeur is hoping to advance one step further and win her first major grand slam in Melbourbne.
In a thrilling 3 set victory, Jabeur consolidated a much needed win over Slovenian Tamara Zidansek to advance to the second round of the Australian Open with a 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-1 win in 2 hours and 17 minutes. Tensions were heightened as Jabeur had lost to the Slovenian in their last meeting.
Post Match Reflections by Ons Jabeur…
“It was a very tough match,”
“I wasn’t playing very well, and she was putting a lot of pressure on me. She’s a player that doesn’t give up and brings every ball in, so I was getting pretty frustrated. I told myself to be No.2 in the world and just win this match.”
