A promise of a small portion of funding for regional students have been made in hopes to increase the performance of universities around Australia and has been appraised as a “starting point” for a new era of growth.

Almost 2000 extra scholarships will be available for regional and remote university students as part of a $135 million funding boost for higher education.

An announcement from Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan has given the education of university students hope and the future of Australia the opportunity to grow even further  with very uplifting words.

“Every Australian, no matter where they live, should have access to Australia’s world-leading higher education system,” Mr Tehan says.

Mr Tehan has met with university vice-chancellors in Wollongong to discuss reports on performance-based funding and hopes to finalise the details by the end of the month, after further meetings with university bosses.

As stated by James Cook University Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding, this will allow an expansion of the successful diploma of higher education program.

Universities have been a keystone to improving Australia’s productivity and fulfilling the government’s promise to create 1.25 million jobs over the next five years and this funding would be a great way to speed up that process.

University performance will be determined by such factors as graduate job outcomes, student success, student experience and participation of indigenous, low socioeconomic status, and regional and remote students.
