Head to a harbour lookout
Well known as the Harbour City, Sydney is not short of breathtaking views. With so many reserves and parks overlooking the harbour, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to picnic and vantage spots.Taking in the view of the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge is one of Sydney’s quintessential free outings.
Hyde Park
It’s hard to miss the giant Hyde Park when you’re in the CBD. Whether you’re looking to spend some time in the sun or hope to learn something about Australia’s history, Hyde Park is not short of lush green grass to spend time on and has a handful of historic monuments.
Over the summer months the park is a hive of activity particularly during the Festival of Sydney when there is plenty of free entertainment.
Art Gallery of NSW
One of Australia’s most important cultural institutions, the building itself is almost as impressive as the art that hangs on its walls.The gallerys first public exhibition opened in 1874 and houses a huge collection of Australian, Indigenous, European and Asian art.
Located next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, the two can be combined to make a great free days outing.
Bondi Beach
The sweeping white sand crescent is Australia’s most famous beach. An eclectic mix of locals, tourists, surfers, swimmers, photographers and fitness fanatics make for a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Patrolled by its world famous lifesavers, always swim between the flags as rips are not uncommon.
The Rocks
The Rocks is the foundation place of Sydney and Australia, making it a place of huge cultural significance.Often described as an outdoor museum, wander the cobblestone laneways and marvel at the centuries old heritage buildings.The Rocks Discovery Museum housed in an 1850s sandstone warehouse, is a free family friendly museum that tells the story of The Rocks from pre european settlement to the present.
St Mary’s Cathedral
The spiritual home to Sydney’s catholic community, all are welcome to visit. Construction was started in 1868 and completed in 2000. The cathedral offers a spiritual experience whether you are religious or not. If you love history or architecture, the building and its interior will offer lots of interesting discoveries.
