In a significant development, the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution was passed with 14 votes in favour, with the United States deciding to abstain.
The call for a ceasefire comes five months into the ongoing conflict. The resolution also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. The decision by the United States to abstain marks a shift from its previous position.
The resolution, tabled by the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, also calls for ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza. Despite a proposed amendment by Russia for a permanent ceasefire, the Council rejected it.
The US ambassador stated that her delegation “fully supports” the critical objectives of the draft. However, the lack of condemnation of Hamas in the draft was cited as a reason for the US abstention.
The Israeli government expressed disappointment with the US decision to abstain. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel ordered a delegation scheduled to go to Washington for high-level talks with U.S. officials to remain in Israel.
Despite the international call for a ceasefire, top Israeli officials indicated that they would not implement the resolution for now. The Israeli foreign minister, Israel Katz, stated on social media, “The State of Israel will not cease firing. We will destroy Hamas and continue fighting until every last hostage has come home”.
This resolution represents a significant step towards peace in the region. However, the implementation and impact of this resolution remain to be seen in the coming days.
