Ramadan 2026

The month of Ramadan is fast approaching for muslims around the world. In Australia, Ramadan is expected to begin on February 18 2026, and is expected to last until the evening of 19 March 2026 (depending on the moon-sighting). Eid Al-fitr is expected to immediately follow on the 20 March 2026, but may vary depending again on the moon sighting, and by community. It is important to note that the dates will vary between countries a-Compare what remains to Nisab (gold or silver).
-If Zakat is due, calculate 2.5% of the qualifying amount.
Detailed rules for Zakat developed from the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
-
- If a person has acquired and held the minimum wealth threshold (known as Nisab) for a particular year, they are then obliged to pay the standard rate of 2.5% of that wealth.
- The wealth, or assets, to determine this test includes monetary savings, gold and other minerals, investments, and other assets.
- Nisab is traditionally based on the value of gold or silver – the threshold will vary based on mineral and currency valuations.
Zakat is generally due once per islamic lunar year when the conditions are met. People often choose to pay Zakat during the month of Ramadan for increased spiritual reward, however it is not specified that a muslim must pay during this month, as they may choose another suitable time during the islamic calendar year.
There are main types of Zakat – Zakat al-Mal, and Zakat al-Fitr.
Zakat al-Mal, known as Zakat on wealth, is the form of charity described earlier, where a person offers 2.5% of eligible assets.
In contrast, Zakat al-Fitr is a separate obligatory charity given before the holy Eid al-Fitr prayer. This form of zakat is usually paid as a small amount per person (or per household) , and ensure that even the poor and disadvantaged can celebrate Eid.
Another form of charity is Sadaqah, which is a voluntary charity a person may wish to give at any time, and of any amount.
Zakat can usually be paid to the local Mosque, however for those unable to visit, there are a number of registered organisations that may also accept Zakat and spread your blessings to those in need.
